Education

Continuing Legal Education ("CLE") programs enable ALOC members to keep up with developments in the law and improve their legal skills thereby ensuring that Crown Counsel meet high standards of professional competence. ALOC assists in the provision of CLE programs to its members by organizing an annual educational conference, jointly organizing lunch and learn CLE programs with the Legal Services Division of the Ministry of the Attorney General and by participating in other CLE events such as the Public Sector Lawyers Section of the Ontario Bar Association and the Chief Justice of Ontario's Advisory Committee on Professionalism which host a number of CLE programs.

ALOC/Government of Ontario Educational Conference
ALOC's annual educational conferences have been an important component in the continuing legal education of government civil lawyers since ALOC's first educational conference was held in March 1990. Effective 2006, the annual educational conference was renamed the ALOC/Government of Ontario Educational Conference. The main goal of the conference is to enhance the knowledge and skills of ALOC members by providing seminars and workshops on topics that are relevant to Crown Counsel. The conference provides opportunities for ALOC members to develop contacts and build relationships with each other through networking and team building activities. This provides our members with resources that they can draw upon when resolving complex or unfamiliar legal issues. The conference also provides an opportunity to encourage excellence in ALOC members by recognizing their achievements and providing opportunities to share their skills and knowledge with other government lawyers.

Information about this year’s ALOC/Government of Ontario Educational Conference is contained in the member's section of our site.

Lunch and Learns
The Sub-Committee on Learning (Lawyers) is a sub-committee of the Legal Services Division Education Committee. It is a jointly sponsored committee of ALOC and the Legal Services Division of the Ministry of the Attorney General, with a co-chair nominated by each sponsor. The Sub-Committee's membership reflects its joint sponsorship with members being drawn from each sponsor. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General for the Legal Services Division nominates members for the Division and the President of ALOC nominates members on behalf of ALOC.

The mandate of the Sub-Committee on Learning for Lawyers is to identify, sponsor and promote learning or educational opportunities related to general education and professional skills for lawyers in the Legal Services Division. The Sub-Committee organizes a range of education events throughout the year. Information about future lunch and learn programs is contained in the member's section of our site.
